THE EWING AND SHAFFER FAMILIES
Letter from Marie Duncan-Wagers
September 7, 2007
We went
to Nauvoo last Saturday. They have added a new memorial for the pioneers
who left Nauvoo, but never made it to Salt Lake City. The wall says
"UPON THESE WALLS ARE THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO DIED BEFORE THEIR JOURNEY'S END"
Esther EWING and James Clark EWING are listed on the board.
They died in August 1847.
Esther SHAFFER was the wife of Samuel EWING
~ They were the parents of Anderson Shaffer Ewing ~
~ grandparents of Almeda Elizabeth (Ewing) Carr ~
~ great great grandparents of John Ewing Carr ~
Samuel EWING and Esther SHAFFER were pioneers to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Esther and her son James died in August 1847 while crossing the plains.
Eliza Snow, In her Mormon Trail diary, said she saw the burial of
Mrs. Ewing on the 4th of August, 1847.
They were about 15 miles "this side" of Ft. Laramie, Wyoming.
